Stroke Mechanics
- Grip and Setup: Grip style (conventional, cross-handed, claw), eye position over the ball, shoulder-driven stroke, minimal wrist involvement.
- Face Angle at Impact: The dominant factor in starting line; TrackMan research established that face angle at impact determines approximately 80% of a shot's initial direction, with swing path accounting for most of the remainder.
- Tempo and Rhythm: Consistent backswing-to-forward-stroke ratio; avoid deceleration through impact.
- Short Putts (inside 6 feet): Prioritize face control and committed stroke; eliminate doubt before addressing the ball.
- Long Putts (15+ feet): Speed control is primary; lag putting to a zone, not a point.
Stroke Intention: Through the Ball vs. At the Ball
One of the most consequential and least-discussed choices in putting is what the stroke is trying to do at impact — accelerate through the ball toward a follow-through target, or arrive at the ball and stop.
- Hitting at the ball: the stroke decelerates into impact, using the ball as the stopping point. This promotes a jabbing motion, inconsistent face angle, and variable pace. Almost universally a fault; most three-putts and missed short putts trace back to it. It often disguises itself as "feel" putting but is actually tension-driven deceleration.
- Hitting through the ball: the stroke uses impact as a midpoint, not an endpoint. The putter is accelerating through the ball toward an imaginary target 6–12 inches beyond it. This produces a smoother, more consistent delivery, a more stable face, and better distance control. The follow-through length governs pace: a longer follow-through sends the ball farther; a shorter one sends it less.
- The backswing-to-follow-through ratio: most instructors teach a roughly 1:1 or 1:1.5 ratio (follow-through slightly longer than backswing). A very short follow-through relative to the backswing almost always signals deceleration. If the follow-through consistently collapses, the cause is usually anxiety on short putts or a backswing that is too long for the intended pace.
- Practical cue: pick a spot on the green 8–10 inches past the ball on the intended start line and roll the ball over that spot. This shifts mental focus past the ball, promotes acceleration, and simplifies the stroke to a roll rather than a hit.
- Distance control via follow-through: for longer putts, calibrate the follow-through length rather than trying to hit harder. A 30-foot putt needs a longer follow-through than a 10-footer, not a faster stroke. Keeping tempo constant and varying length is more repeatable than varying effort.
Putting Without a Direct Line
Not every putt has a clear, unobstructed path to the hole. Tiers, significant slope changes, severe breaks, and ridge lines can make putting directly at the hole the wrong play — or physically impossible.
- The double-breaking putt: some greens have a hump or ridge between ball and hole that causes the ball to break one direction, then the other. Read each section of the putt separately — find where the ball will cross the ridge and what it will do after. The entry angle at the ridge determines the second break; speed control is everything, since arriving at the ridge too fast or too slow changes the second half completely.
- Playing for a tier: when the hole is on a different tier than the ball, the ball must navigate the slope between them. On an uphill tier, aim to arrive at the top of the slope with just enough speed to feed down to the hole; too much speed and the ball races past. On a downhill tier, use the slope — play the ball to the lip of the tier and let gravity carry it down rather than trying to hold speed all the way.
- The "impossible" line — playing away from the hole: when the most direct line runs over a severe ridge, hump, or through an area where any realistic pace leads to a very bad outcome (a 10-foot comeback downhill), the correct play is to putt away from the direct line and use the slope to bring the ball back. Identify the high point the ball needs to reach, aim there, and let the green deliver it. This requires accepting a longer putt if it misses, but avoids the three-putt risk of the direct aggressive line.
- Grain-influenced indirect lines: on Bermuda greens, strong grain can push a ball so severely that the "straight" line is wrong. A putt that looks straight may need to be aimed a foot outside the hole if the grain runs hard across the line. Read grain as a secondary break force on top of slope.
- Speed is the primary tool: on all non-direct putts, speed determines which line the ball takes. The same putt hit at two different speeds takes two different paths because the ball breaks more as it slows. Calibrate speed first, then choose the line that works at that speed — not the other way around.
- Lagging to a zone: when there is no good direct line, reframe the goal. Instead of trying to make the putt, focus on landing the ball in a 3-foot circle in the best position for a tap-in. Define the zone before you putt — uphill of the hole if possible — and play to it deliberately rather than hoping the ball finds its way.
Green Reading
Green reading is a learnable skill, not an instinct. Players who read putts well follow a consistent process that gathers information from multiple sources before committing to a line. The process begins before the ball lands on the green and ends the moment the stroke starts.
Step 1 — Read the macro from the fairway (50–100 yards out)
The overall tilt of a green is easiest to read from a distance. From the fairway or approach, note which way the green leans as a whole — toward water, toward a mountain, away from a ridge. This macro tilt is the dominant break direction: it shapes every putt on that green regardless of local contours. Once on the surface, this perspective is largely lost. Use it before you arrive.
Step 2 — Walk the full line, starting from behind the ball
From directly behind the ball on the intended line to the hole, assess the dominant slope. Ask: is this putt uphill, downhill, or sidehill? Where is the high side and low side? The ball will always curve toward the low side — that is the direction of break regardless of any other variable.
Walk to the low side of the putt (perpendicular to the line, on the downhill side) and crouch. From the low side, the break is most visible — the green's slope is at its most readable because you can see the full fall line. For longer putts, also walk the midpoint of the line and assess whether the slope changes along it.
Step 3 — Read from behind the hole
The view from behind the hole shows the final two to three feet of the putt — where the ball slows and the break has its greatest effect. A putt that has died to walking pace takes twice as much break in its final foot as a putt arriving firmly. The last section of the putt is where most putts are lost; reading it specifically from behind the hole is worth the extra time.
Step 4 — Feel the slope underfoot
While walking the line, pay attention to which foot feels heavier. This proprioceptive read is reliable because the body senses grade more accurately than the eye in many conditions. On subtle putts where visual cues are ambiguous, foot feel often resolves the uncertainty. This is the physical basis of AimPoint Express — Marc Lemon's system formalizes the foot feel into a specific finger chart for quantifying how much break to play.
Step 5 — Choose the apex, not the hole, as the target
The most practical aiming framework is to identify the apex — the highest point the ball will reach before it breaks back toward the hole — and aim for that spot rather than the hole itself. The apex is where the putt transitions from climbing the slope to falling with it. Aim at the apex with the speed that gets the ball there, and the slope delivers it to the hole.
For a simple breaking putt, the apex is on the high side of the hole at a distance proportional to the speed and break. A slow putt with significant break has an apex much further outside the hole than a firm putt on the same line; the same slope requires different aim depending on speed.
Speed is line — the most important principle in green reading:
Break is not fixed. The same putt hit at two different speeds takes two different lines, because the ball breaks more as it slows. This means speed and line are not independent decisions — they are one decision. Choose the speed first (how firmly do you want to hit this putt?), then find the apex that works at that speed. Players who choose a line first and then try to match speed to it are working backward.
The practical consequence: a firm putt plays less break and aims closer to the hole; a dying putt plays more break and requires more aim outside the hole. Deciding to play a putt "firm at the left edge" or "dying outside the right edge" encodes speed and line simultaneously in one image. This is how tour players describe their reads.
The high side — always miss there:
A putt that misses on the high side (above the hole) stays in the break and has a chance of falling in as it slows; a ball rolling on the low side (below the hole) cannot fall in by gravity regardless of how close it is. "Never up, never in" is most precisely about the low side miss: the ball had every chance to fall but gravity was working against it from the moment it passed the hole. Aim to miss on the high side as a default when uncertain about the amount of break.
Reading grain:
Grain is the direction the grass blades grow, and it affects both speed and break — most significantly on Bermuda grass, moderately on Paspalum, and minimally on bent grass.
- Into the grain: grass looks dull or dark. Putts are slower and hold their line better against grain.
- Downgrain: grass looks shiny or light. Putts are faster and release more freely.
- Cross-grain: adds or subtracts break on top of slope. A putt breaking left with grain also running left breaks significantly more than slope alone suggests; grain running against the slope partially negates the slope break.
- Grain grows toward the setting sun on Bermuda greens — a reliable shortcut for afternoon rounds. The low side of the grain run is roughly west in the afternoon.
- Near the hole: grain direction in the final foot has an outsized effect because the ball is slowest there and most susceptible to any lateral force. Check grain near the cup specifically if the overall putt read seems uncertain.
Poa annua greens:
Poa is the dominant green grass on NorCal and many coastal courses. It opens and closes through the day, creating afternoon bumpiness that disrupts the ball's initial roll. Morning rounds are more predictable; reduce expectations for holding the line on shorter putts as the day warms. Poa also tends to be slower than bent or Bermuda at the same Stimp rating — play for a slightly firmer stroke.
Speed conditions — adjusting to the day:
Every green plays at a different speed depending on time of day, recent mowing, moisture, temperature, and Stimp measurement. The pre-round calibration (5–10 lag putts from 30–40 feet on the practice green) is not optional for accurate distance control. Morning dew slows greens; afternoon drying accelerates them; recent rain slows them significantly; firm hot conditions accelerate them into a different game entirely.
Spike marks and ball marks near the hole:
Old unrepaired ball marks and spike marks in the final foot deflect arriving balls, particularly those dying at the cup. Under the Rules, spike marks cannot be repaired before putting (only pitch marks). Awareness of damage near the hole informs pace: a ball arriving with slightly more speed holds its line through imperfections better than one dying at the cup. If the area around the hole is visibly damaged, err toward a slightly firmer stroke.
AimPoint Express:
Developed by Marc Lemon, AimPoint Express formalizes foot feel into a practical system: the player rates the slope underfoot on a 1–4 scale, then holds up a number of fingers corresponding to that rating in front of their face. The edge of the appropriate finger aligns with the hole and creates a specific aiming point outside the cup. It eliminates the subjective "I think it breaks about a cup outside" guess and replaces it with a measurable, repeatable process. Used by many tour players; worth learning as a half-day clinic rather than from reading alone.
Pre-Putt Routine
- Read First, Then Commit: Complete the read before stepping into address; second-guessing the line from over the ball is a leading cause of poor strokes.
- Practice Stroke Purpose: Use practice strokes to calibrate feel for distance, not to rehearse the stroke mechanics; one or two focused strokes is enough.
- Final Look: One look at the hole from address to reconfirm the starting line and lock in the speed; then eyes back to the ball and stroke without delay. Extended staring at the hole increases tension and slows the stroke.
- Trigger: Pick a consistent trigger — a breath, a forward press, a specific glance — that signals the transition from setup to stroke. The routine's value is its repeatability under pressure.
Flagstick In or Out
Since 2019, the flagstick may be left in while putting from anywhere on the course without penalty. Multiple independent studies reach the same conclusion: leaving it in is a net advantage for most golfers most of the time. The key variable is not distance but arrival speed.
- The physics: a fiberglass flagstick absorbs energy on contact, slowing the ball and helping it fall in. A ball arriving slowly that strikes the flag is funneled downward into the cup. A ball arriving at high speed can ricochet out — but research shows even most overhit putts still benefit from the flag, because the energy absorbed turns a likely miss into a make or a short tap-in rather than a long comeback.
- No clean distance threshold: research does not support a specific yardage inside or outside of which the flag definitively helps or hurts. Distance affects arrival speed on average, but a soft 30-footer and a firm 8-footer can arrive at the same speed.
- When the flag can hurt: a well-struck, on-line putt hit with real pace — one arriving faster than "dying at the cup" — can strike the rigid flag and kick out. This risk is highest on short, confident uphill putts where you are attacking the hole. Low-side entry (a breaking putt arriving from the side rather than head-on) is also more vulnerable to deflection; research has found low-side putts are holed less frequently with the flag in.
- When the flag clearly helps: downhill putts where you cannot commit to firm pace; lag putts from long range; any putt where the ball is likely to arrive at the hole with diminishing speed. The flag catches putts that would otherwise trickle past.
- Leaning flag: a flagstick leaning slightly toward you is more helpful, not less — it deflects the ball downward into the cup. Under the 2019 rules, a ball resting against a leaning flag is holed if any part of it is below the surface of the green.
- Wind exception: a flag swaying in wind can deflect a ball unpredictably; removing it in gusty conditions is sensible.
- Practical default: leave it in. The scenarios where the flag costs you a make are real but uncommon; the scenarios where it saves one are more frequent in the average amateur round. The one situation to reconsider is a short, firm, straight-in putt where you are confident in the pace and line.
- Chipping and pitching: the same logic applies from off the green. A chip hit at lag pace benefits from the flag; a firm bump-and-run aimed dead at the cup may be better without it.
Lag Putting
The goal: two putts, not one. For any putt from outside 20–25 feet, the realistic and correct goal is two putts — not making the putt. Trying to make a 40-footer creates a stroke calibrated for a single point; lag putting aims at a zone that ensures the next putt is a tap-in. Shifting the goal from "make it" to "leave it within 3 feet" is not defeatism — it is the correct application of probability. PGA Tour ShotLink data shows tour players three-putt from 30+ feet roughly 10–15% of the time; most amateur players do so far more often, almost always because they tried to make the putt and left themselves a difficult second.
The corollary is that inside 20 feet, expectations can and should rise: you have a real chance of making the putt, and lagging conservatively from 15 feet is leaving a birdie or par opportunity on the table. The transition zone is roughly 20–25 feet — at that range, committing to make it is reasonable; from further, lag is the correct strategy.
Speed is the only thing that matters on a lag putt. Line matters too, but a putt that is 3 feet short and on-line is still a 3-foot putt; a putt that is 3 feet off-line but the right distance is also a 3-foot putt. A putt that rolls 8 feet past on the right line is a problem. Speed control should consume 80% of the mental focus on any putt from 25+ feet. Read the line to a general quadrant (above or below the hole), commit to a speed, and execute.
The 3-foot circle drill: on the practice green, place a tee or coin 3 feet from the hole in each direction to mark the circle of acceptable second putts. Lag from 30, 40, and 50 feet and count how many balls come to rest inside the circle. This is the most direct measurement of lag putting quality. A good target: 8 out of 10 inside the circle from 30 feet; 6–7 from 40–50 feet. If results are worse than this, distance control is the problem, not line. The clock drill: place balls at 30 feet in four directions from the hole (12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions). This exposes the fact that uphill putts tend to finish short, downhill putts long, and sidehill putts drift in ways that standard back-and-forth practice conceals. Completing the drill from all four positions — and scoring how many land inside the 3-foot circle — is more diagnostic than hitting 20 putts from the same spot. Calibrating to the green that day: the most important lag putting practice happens before the round, not at home on a carpet. Spend 5 minutes hitting lag putts from 30–50 feet on the actual practice green before the round — after the physical warm-up, not before it (cold muscles produce misleading feel; see Pre-Round Physical Warm-Up in Physical Fitness and Mobility). Every green plays at a different speed, slope, and grain. The goal is not to make these putts — it is to calibrate how hard "medium effort" sends the ball on this surface today. Two or three long lag putts tell you more about the day's conditions than any amount of short-putt practice.
The Pelz 17-inch rule: Dave Pelz's research found that the optimal pace for holing putts is one that would carry the ball 17 inches past the hole if it misses. This pace keeps the ball online through the final break (a ball dying at the hole is more vulnerable to imperfections in the green) while not going so far past that the comeback putt is difficult. For lag putting, this translates to a useful mental image: aim to finish 12–20 inches past the hole rather than dead at the cup. A ball that dies at the hole has bled all its energy fighting the break and is easily deflected by spike marks or grain; a ball with slightly more pace holds its line better in the final foot.
Uphill vs. downhill asymmetry: the consequences of a speed error are not symmetric. On an uphill lag putt, finishing 4 feet short leaves a makeable uphill putt; finishing 4 feet long also leaves a makeable putt. On a downhill lag putt, finishing 4 feet short leaves a fast downhill putt; finishing 4 feet long leaves a fast downhill comeback. The risk profile is skewed. On downhill putts, calibrate to finish closer — favor the short side of the zone. On uphill putts, dying at the hole is a safe outcome. This asymmetry changes the target within the 3-foot circle depending on slope.
Lagging onto a ridge from below: one of the most demanding lag putting situations is when the hole sits above a ridge or shelf and the ball must climb the ridge before feeding down toward the hole. The challenge is that the ball decelerates sharply as it climbs the slope, and the exact point where it crests the ridge determines everything that follows — too little pace and it rolls back toward you; too much and it crests with speed it cannot shed before reaching the hole, often running well past.
- The target is the ridge, not the hole. Mentally redirect the putt: your job is to deliver the ball to the top of the ridge with just enough pace to clear it. What happens after is dictated by the slope. If you aim for the hole, you will almost always either leave it short of the ridge or send it too far past.
- Read the ridge entry point carefully. The ball must cross the ridge at a specific spot — usually the lowest point of the ridge on the intended line — to feed correctly toward the hole. A ball that crests too far to one side will feed away from the hole along the ridge rather than down toward it. Walk the line and identify the exact crossing point.
- Pace at the top, not at the ball. The stroke needs enough pace to carry the ball up the slope and arrive at the ridge crest with just enough energy to tip over. Think of it as a lobbed shot in slow motion: the ball should barely make it over the top. This requires more initial pace than the visual of a slow putt suggests, because the slope absorbs significant energy.
- Practice specifically: on the practice green, find a hole above a slope or ridge. Lag from below and count how many times the ball crests the ridge and finishes within the tap-in zone. This is a different skill from flat-green lag putting and it degrades without specific work. Even 10 minutes before a round on a course with tiered greens pays off immediately.
- When the ridge is too severe: if the ridge is very steep and the hole is close to its top, there may be no pace that both crests the ridge and stops near the hole — too little rolls back, too much runs away. In that situation, accept a longer second putt and focus on cresting the ridge at all, leaving yourself an uphill second from below rather than an impossible downhill from above.
Uphill and Downhill Putting
Slope changes the physics of the putt, the risk profile of a speed error, and the psychological challenge. These are not symmetric situations and should not be treated as such.
Uphill putts:
- The slope slows the ball as it approaches the hole, which means it holds its line better in the final feet — the ball is less vulnerable to imperfections, grain, and spike marks near the cup. This is an advantage.
- The ball breaks less than it appears from address. Players consistently under-read uphill putts because the slope makes the break look larger than it plays. The ball has more forward momentum fighting the lateral break.
- The optimal pace is more aggressive than on flat putts. Dying at the hole on an uphill putt invites a wobble or deflection; a firmer stroke that would finish 18–24 inches past if missed holds its line cleanly and drops center.
- A speed error that leaves the ball short means a short uphill putt — the most makeable second putt in golf. A speed error that goes past means a longer uphill putt, still manageable. The risk of an aggressive pace on an uphill putt is low.
- Psychological note: uphill putts should feel like opportunities. Commit to a firm, confident stroke. Most three-putts on uphill putts come from being timid, leaving the ball short, and then facing a nervous short putt.
Downhill putts:
- The slope accelerates the ball through the final feet, making it more susceptible to any lateral slope. The ball breaks more than it appears — players consistently over-read the break and under-weight the speed problem. The reduced pace late in the putt amplifies lateral movement; play less break than instinct suggests.
- The optimal pace is the most difficult part. The ball must be stroked softly enough to stay controllable, but any hesitation produces a jabbing, decelerating stroke. A smooth, short swing with a full follow-through is more reliable than a tentative dab.
- A speed error short leaves a fast downhill putt — often the most feared shot in putting. A speed error long leaves a longer fast downhill comeback. Both outcomes are bad. This is why the acceptable zone on a downhill lag is tighter: aim to finish just past the hole, not well past it.
- Technique adjustment: some players find it useful to grip down slightly and shorten the backswing on steep downhill putts, keeping the stroke compact to reduce the risk of over-hitting. The putter should feel like it barely needs to touch the ball. Let gravity do the work.
- Psychological note: downhill putts demand calm and acceptance. The stroke should feel almost passive — more of a release than a hit. Anxiety produces grip tightening, which produces a jabbing stroke, which produces the exact result (ball racing past) that was feared. Take extra time over the read, commit to a very gentle pace, and let the ball go.
When the Hole Sits on a Slope
A hole cut into a slope creates a tilted cup: one rim is raised, one is lower. This changes which entry angle is accessible and narrows the pace margin significantly. The key principle: the low side of the cup is the opening; the high side is a wall. A ball arriving at the low rim needs barely enough pace to reach the edge and fall in. A ball arriving at the high rim must have enough pace to carry the elevated edge — and if it has too much, it lips out and races past.
The strategic implication: always route the ball to enter from the low side at dying pace when a choice exists. On a putt where you can play straight at the cup with firm pace or play more break and let the ball die into the low side — always take the low-side route. The hole is most accessible from below, regardless of how much extra break that requires.
Reading the cup: before putting, look at the cup from the side to see how it sits on the slope. A visibly tilted cup shows one rim lower than the other — aim there.
The three scenarios:

Uphill to a sloped hole: the best-case combination. You arrive from below (low-side entry) and the uphill slope naturally slows the ball. Play firmly and confidently; three-putting from here is almost always a result of timid pace leaving the first putt short.

Downhill to a sloped hole: the hardest combination. You arrive from above (high-side entry) while the slope accelerates the ball. Play significantly more break than instinct suggests to route the ball around to the low side at dying pace. If no low-side entry is achievable, accept a two-putt, focus only on pace, and leave the ball below the hole for an uphill tap-in.

Sidehill to a sloped hole: depends entirely on which direction the break carries the ball relative to which rim is low. If the break and the low side align, the putt is favorable — play it dying. If the break pushes toward the high side, consider playing more break to find the low rim, even if the line looks improbably wide. Read the cup's tilt first, then find the line that routes to the low rim at dying pace.
The Berm Around the Cup
Some holes have a slightly raised ring of turf around the cup — a small berm or crown in the last several inches before the hole. It's most noticeable on a dying putt that looks perfect, reaches the edge, and then is gently deflected away instead of dropping. Recognizing it and adjusting for it saves real strokes, because it almost exclusively affects putts arriving at slow pace.
Why it happens:
- Concentrated foot traffic. Players walk around the hole to retrieve their ball, read putts, and tend the flag, compacting and slightly raising the turf in a ring just outside the cup while the immediate lip is protected.
- Repeated cup-cutting. Each time the hole is moved, a new cup is cut and the old one plugged. Over a season, careless or repeated cutting in the same region of the green pushes turf up at the edges and leaves the surface fractionally proud around the current hole.
- Mowing limitations. Mowers can't cut tight to the cup, so the grass in the final inch or two around the lip grows slightly longer and stiffer than the surrounding green, creating a subtle speed bump.
- A poorly changed hole. If the cup liner is set slightly high, or the plug from the previous hole hasn't settled, the rim sits proud of the surface. This is a maintenance error, but you'll encounter it.
- Soil heave and dryness. On older or under-watered greens, the soil immediately around the cup can dry and heave slightly, raising the ring.
Why it matters — it's a pace problem, not a line problem:
A berm only affects a ball that arrives with very little momentum. A putt dying at the hole can be turned away by a raised lip it doesn't have the speed to climb; a putt arriving with adequate pace rolls straight over it and drops. This is the physical basis for the old instruction to give the hole a chance by getting the ball to the cup with enough speed — a berm punishes the timid putt specifically.
How to read it:
- Look at the last few inches before the cup from a crouch, the same way you'd read break. A berm shows as a slightly raised, sometimes darker or longer ring of grass around the lip.
- Check the area you'll be walking and the area around the hole on your way in. If the green is busy, late in the day, or has visibly worn turf around the cup, assume some berm is present.
- On a putt that looks dead straight and perfectly paced but keeps missing low or sliding off the edge, the berm is a likely culprit — not your read.
How to play it:
- Add pace. The single best adjustment. Aim to roll the ball about a foot past the hole rather than dying it at the front edge. A ball arriving with that much pace carries any normal berm and removes the deflection entirely. On a bermed hole, "die it in the front door" is the wrong plan.
- Favor the firmer line. Because firmer pace means less break, commit to a straighter line played with conviction rather than a wide, slow, breaking putt that arrives without the speed to climb the lip.
- Accept the trade-off. Adding pace means a missed putt runs further past — a slightly longer comeback. On a bermed hole this is the correct trade: a 2-foot comeback after a confident attempt beats a dead-weight putt repeatedly turned away at the edge.
- Don't over-read break in the last few inches. A berm can mimic or mask break right at the hole. Trust your overall read and your pace; the berm is handled by speed, not by aiming around it.
Putting Drills
String line drill: Tie a piece of string between two tees or alignment sticks, stretched taut from just behind the ball to the hole along the intended line. The string reveals three things simultaneously: the true start line, whether the putter face is square to that line at address, and whether the ball rolls end-over-end or wobbles (confirming a clean strike vs. a glancing blow). Hitting putts along a string line for 10–15 minutes recalibrates face awareness faster than almost any other putting drill. It is particularly effective for players who think they aim straight but don't — the string exposes a closed or open face at address that feel alone cannot detect.
Gate drill for short putts: Place two tees just wider than the putter head, 6–12 inches in front of the ball on the intended line. The gate forces an on-path stroke — any deviation hits a tee and gives instant feedback. A second gate placed just beyond the ball trains face angle at the moment of impact. Start with a wide gate and narrow it as accuracy improves. Practice from 4–6 feet. This is one of the best drills for players who miss short putts consistently to one side — it isolates whether the error is path (one tee is always hit) or face angle (the ball starts on line but curves off).
One-hand drill: Putt with the lead hand only, trail hand held behind the back. The lead hand controls the face; without the trail hand to compensate, any wrist breakdown or deceleration immediately produces a missed putt. Five minutes of lead-hand-only putting reveals how dependent you are on the trail hand to rescue a poor stroke — and trains the shoulder-driven pendulum motion that produces consistency. Progress: start with 3-footers, extend to 6 feet, then attempt 10-foot lag putts with the lead hand alone.
Pure roll drill (coin or logo): Place the ball with the manufacturer's logo along the intended start line. If the stroke produces a true, end-over-end roll, the logo spins cleanly in a consistent circle. If the stroke is a glancing blow — off-center contact or a twisted face — the logo wobbles. No equipment needed beyond awareness; this drill trains contact quality and face angle simultaneously and works anywhere there is a flat surface.
The 100-putt short putt test: From 3 feet, putt 10 balls from each of the 10 positions around a hole (12, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 o'clock). Count the total made out of 100. This is the single most diagnostic short-putting test available: it exposes whether you miss consistently from one direction (face or path issue), or from multiple directions (commitment issue). A good recreational target is 85/100; tour players typically exceed 95/100. Track the number across sessions — improvement from 70 to 80 is meaningful and shows up in actual round scoring within weeks.
